I Didn't Realise I'd Become A "Golden Person" Until My Daughter Pointed It Out
It was a throwaway comment. My daughter was over for lunch, Milo had his head on her knee, and she looked around my lounge room and said, "Mum, you've become a Golden person."
I laughed. Then I looked around properly.
The tennis balls under the couch. The blanket he's claimed on the good armchair. The fur, honestly, on everything. Somewhere along the way, my whole house had quietly rearranged itself around one very happy dog.
Mum, you've become a Golden person.
How It Happens
Nobody decides to organise their life around a dog. It just happens, one small habit at a time.
You move the chair so he can see out the window. You keep his blanket where he likes it. You find yourself talking to him in a voice you'd never use in public.
I thought maybe I'd gone a bit soft. Then I read that 87% of dog owners my age call their dog family, far more than younger people do. And a 2026 study out of La Trobe University found that the bond of caring for something that depends on you is genuinely good for women our age.
So no, I hadn't gone soft. I'd just stopped pretending it wasn't the best part of my day.
What I Had Wrong
Here's what I got wrong. I thought dog things had to look like dog things.
Plastic tubs. Paw-print everything. Stuff you hide in the laundry when people come over.
Milo's blanket had been living in a cracked plastic tub for years. It did the job. It also looked like it.
I didn't think anyone made something for his things that actually belonged in a lounge room.
Mine Is Called Sunny

Three Things I've Learned Since
One. It arrives a little flat. That's normal for soft quilted fabric. Give it a minute of shaping by hand and put the blanket in, and it holds its shape from then on.
Two. Choose the size by what's going in it, not by the numbers. A blanket and a couple of toys suit the Medium. If your dog has a whole collection, go Large.
Three. It wipes clean, which matters when you share a house with a dog who sheds like Milo does.
